Banners That Last: Choosing the Right Weight, Finish & Size
13oz vs. heavy-duty vinyl, hems and grommets, mesh for wind, and sizing for your space — a practical banner guide from DC Graphics.

Banners are the go-to for grand openings, sales, events, sponsorships and job sites because they’re big, portable, and inexpensive. A little know-how makes the difference between a banner that lasts one weekend and one that lasts years.
Choose the right vinyl weight
- 13oz vinyl — the standard. Perfect for most indoor and short-to-medium outdoor use.
- 18oz heavy-duty — for long-term outdoor display and tough conditions.
- Mesh — has tiny perforations that let wind pass through. Use it on fences and building faces in windy spots.
Finishing: hems & grommets
Always ask for hemmed edges (folded and welded) — they keep the banner from fraying and tearing at the corners. Grommets (metal rings) every 2–3 feet give you clean tie-down points with rope or zip ties.
Size it for the space
Common sizes are 2×4, 3×6 and 4×8 feet. Measure your wall, fence, or railing first, and leave room on all sides. For readability, bigger is almost always better — a banner that’s too small gets lost.
Retractable banners for indoor events
For trade shows, lobbies and registration tables, a retractable (pull-up) banner stand sets up in seconds and travels in its own case. It’s reusable for years and looks polished at every event.
Design that reads from across the lot
- One clear headline, large.
- High contrast colors.
- Logo and phone number easy to spot.
- Don’t fill every inch — white space helps.
